I just purchased a new battery for my 135 because the old one was dead and wouldn't hold a charge but when I hooked up the new one up there is a small spark on the terminals like something is draining on the battery even thought the key is off. I'm afraid if I leave it hooked up it will drain my new battey. Any suggestions what it may be? Does it have an internal regulator that may be sticking or ??? It is a 12 volt system and is about a 1967 model. It worked fine last fall.
Thanks,
Bryan

If it is a Delco alt, either internal reg or external reg, it has a small capacitor inside which has to charge up the first time you hook up the battery cable. If you get the spark the first time you hook up the battery after being disconnected for several hours, immediately disconnect and reconnect the battery and note if there is a spark the second time you connect the battery. If there is NOT a spark the SECOND time you connect the battery, you have found the cause.

It is a Delco Remy. Are you saying if there are no spark the second time the capacitor is good or bad??

Thanks Gerald. I have taken it off and am taking it to an electrical shop Friday. I will let you know what it was.

Lights left on? Dash lighting inverter stuck on? If there's a spark there's a load. Could be a stuck cut out section of the voltage regulator. Won't keep the new battery charged either until you fix it. Hook a 12 volt lamp in series with the battery connection and it will light. E.g. between the battery post and the cable. Unhook wiring until you find the one that turns out the light, then trace that one to wherever it goes and find the last place that disconnecting turns out the light. Its possible it could be wire with an bare spot too.

Is the regulator internal?
Thanks, Bryan

I hooked a test light between the post and terminal and discovered if I unpluged the plug in that goes into the back of the alternator (a small junction box with a red and black wire coming out if it) the test light goes off. Does it sound like a stuck regulator? I belive it has an enternal regulator because it has only 1 wire hooking it to the battery.

Alternator probably has a bad diode or two, and it might be the internal regulator is drawing excessive current. They do fail, regulators and diodes. An automotive electric should be able to check and fix it.

It was the internal regulator. I just had them to build me a new alternator for $55. Works good as new. Thanks,
Bryan
