Hi everyone. I just purchased a Massey Harris. It has 44 Special decals, and the Model/ Serial number is 44 G1RF 59910, which seems to match, but it has an engine with H260A 604 cast into the right side of it. Was the 277 an option, or has someone swapped engines? The PO had a 44 Std in his field which doesn't run. I may see if it doesn't have a 277 sitting in it. I will post some pics as soon as I get them resized. Looking forward to yacking with y'all soon

The 44 and 44 special steering columns are different. Not sure if the 44 has the same shifter plate above the shifter boot as the 44 special. Either way there both great tractors to work with.

I've looked the motor over from stem to stern, and can find no stamped numbers anywhere. There is a cast boss in the upper right front, but I've scraped it clean, and can find no numbers. I'll post in the parts forum, but does anyone have a step pad for sale? How much would one in usable condition run? My old fat body doesn't like climbing up the rear hardware to get seated.

Hello there Missouri MH guy! You have brought out some good discussion topics about the differences, some apparent, some not so apparent, between the plain 44 and the 44 Special. Some peculiar identifying features of the 44 Special, to the best of my knowledge, (and I own 6 of them in various stages of repair)are as follows:
1) The Specials had wider foot pedals than the 44
2) The Special gas tractor had the filler cap mounted on the rear of the tank, not the front like the 44
3) The Special came stock with cast center wheels, both front and rear. (And yes, cast rear wheels were an option on the 44.)
4) The Special gas 277 engine did have a 260 number cast into the block, but then a numeric 277 was hand-stamped into one specific area of the block which had been treated to a disc grinder cleanup! (Without looking at one of mine, I cannot recall where that "277" number is stamped.)
5) Special diesel and LP engines used the 260 engine of the earlier 44.
6) The Special came with an operator step. What a great convenience!
7) The Special had extra (narrow) rails mounted between the inner portion of the fenders and the foot-rest platforms.
8) Later Specials could be ordered with a "Hitch-All" much improved 3 point, over the 44"s inherently weak, 3 point, "plow hitch".
9) Hydraulically equipped Specials generally, (perhaps not always), came with an oval shaped reservoir up front rather than a round tank.
10) And as you have already been told, your serial number indicates that the Special you have was made around the end of their production run in 1955, right before the last of the GREAT Massey-Harris tractors were making their appearance - the "Triples".
Have fun with your Special, a great representative of the innovative, (for their day), and very durable Massey-HARRIS tractors.

Charles, thanks for the picture. I needed to know where the step-up pad was located, as mine is missing. Your pic shows it plainly.

Thanks, but no thanks on selling. It's pretty much just what I need. Plus it's becoming a neat mystery. The engine has no numbers stamped on the upper right front corner of the block. The numbers on the aluminum tag located on the right side of the frame, as well as the numbers on top of the tranny both read 44G1RF 59910. which decodes to a Gas, Normal Altitude, Row Crop, Foot Clutch, which matches, but there is no SP anywhere in the numbers. However, according to what I understand on the serial numbers, the 59910 shows to be a 44Special, toward the end of the production. Fortunately, my needs are simple, and the tractor will fill them nicely, even if it's just a 260 Standard. If I had bought it as a collector, I might be somewhat perturbed though.
Is the aftermarket service manual sold on this site a good one, or is there a better one available? Does it cover both the 44 and the Special? Tanks again for all the help.

On the engine block upper right hand front corner there will be numbers stamped. They will tell you if you have a 260 or 277.
Someone could have changed the front wheels or possibly taken the wide front from a 44 and put it on with the stamped wheels. The serial no. you gave should be a 44SP.

Thanks for the rapid responses. I'm posting a couple of pics. My rear wheels have cast centers, and my fronts are stamped steel. For the trucker who called me from Vegas last night, please reply here as I only got your phone number, and I sure want to know your handle here. Your information is GREATLY appreciated, and answered so many questiones. Now I can jump right into the really pertinant stuff, instead of having to start with the same old newbie questions. Thanks again, Guys. I feel at home here already. Love them old toys and tools!

Steve

Well, I'd better practice with the pictures first.

A lot of the 44's had cast center rear wheels, but all of the row crops I've seen had stamped steel front wheels until the specials which had cast centers in the front wheels. I've got a 51 44 and a 54 44SP here and that's what they have also.
