Can some one tell me how to change the oil in the steering wheel gear box? I could not find a drain plug. It's a MF35

Also, I'm clean it from years of neglect. It has hard baked on oil and dirt. I have used my power washer, but having a hard time getting it all off. Does any one know where I can purchase steel fuel lines?

Hi Guys:

Have any of you pulled out the unit that holds the oil seal for the PTO shaft? Can't figure how to get that thing out. Any suggestions?

Aaron: I ordered the visor through my local dealer. He was able to locate the right one. Hope it is. I'll pick it up tomorrow and let you know if it is the right one. If it is I'll give you all the information.

Thanks All

Hi all. Thanks for all the information.

Arlenin, your right "whoops".

Aaron, what a beauty! How long did it take you to get it looking like this? Hope to have mine looking like yours some day. I have a lot of work ahead of me.

What I'm looking for is the piece that goes with the frame and over the light bulb and looks like an eye lid. This is the best way I know how to describe the item. Maybe this item just came with the MF35 deluxe model.

Fred, the owner manual calls for transmission oil. So that is what I'll put back in. Also, thanks for the input on repacking the wheel bearings. I'll do that.

If removing one of lower bolts will not drain steering box, then the only way to get old oil out is to suck it out. Some use like a turkey baster to suck old oil out.

I have heard of using john deere corn head box oil or grease in steering box.

I would use what is recommended by Ferguson.

also good time to repack front wheel bearings, these bearings get overlooked. If tractor has ever been driven through water wheel bearings can get contaminated with water and start rusting.

Remeber friend had one go bad and had to cut hub off spindle.

Not sure about the steering box, though it is a good idea to change it. My oil had hardened and was totally useless as a lubricant. On my 65, which is totally different than your 35, I had to pull the side plate. One 3/4" scraper and 4 cans of brake cleaner had her shining. Needed a big drain pan, too.

I used 6 cans of citrus engine cleaner prior to the pressure washer. Helped some. I have heard that Dow Scrubbing Bubbles Bathroom cleaner works, but haven't tried it though. Mostly I used the scraper, several wire brushes, and brake cleaner. I should add that if brake cleaner is used in a shop with open flame heat, you may not explode, but you will get drunk. Apparently the fumes combust and you end up with air that is not fit to breathe. Not sure on the stel fuel lines.

Hey Aaron:

Did you sand blast any of your parts? I read some were in the blog that some body did do some sand blasting. I would be worried that sand would get into parts, like bearings and cause all kinds of problems.
Have any input on this?

I sandblasted most every part that would come unbolted. 90% of this tractor went through the sandblast cabinet at work. It was then brushed/blown clean, rinsed, degreased, primed and bolted back up. When the chassis and engine were reassembled, it all got primed again with a red oxide primer. Then primed gray, then painted flint gray metallic. I primed with two different colors because I kept missing areas when priming gray metal with gray primer. The red oxide was enough of a color change to see if I had complete coverage. I tried painting a few parts without repriming grey and they looked terrible. Hence the multiple coats...

nice looking tractor,

do not even want to go out and look at mine after seeing yours.

However, have no problem taking mine to woods to pull trees, would sure hate to take one as nice as yours to woods.

Haven"t had it in the woods yet. Just parade duty and the occasional halloween/christmas light hayride. Gonna use it, but plan to keep it fairly nice for it"s no.1 purpose, entertaining me and the kids...

I think he is talking about the headlight visor.

Pretty hard to come by around here. Found a set at a salvage yard, but the man from the MF dealer upped my bid til I gave up and he walked off with 'em. I made him pay for them though...

I woul;d recommend going to your local Harley dealer and getting stainless visors for a 5 3/4 inch headlight. Should fit.

Gonna try that myself,

Aaron

These eye lids or visors are now available after market but I can't remember where?? Try Sparex or Tisco other tractor catalogs.
