I am looking to get a more powerful tractor and currently have a Ford 9N. I think I want a MF 135 with a front loader and have found one priced at $6500 with power stearing and diesel engin.

It this a fair price?

What should I look for to make sure it's OK?

Were can I get more info on MF 135's?

With the front loader the front tires are way too small. I put 11L-16 on 6 bolt 8" wide rims and that made it handle stuff in the loader much better.

I did about that 11 years ago going from 8N to gas MF-135 with MF-236 loader.

I got the owner's manual from MF and before that the I&T shop manual that helped a lot. Check that the power steering works with a load in the loader bucket. That's when its needed the most and its power assist, not full power. It is breakable. Mine was. The MF-236 loader is too much for the MF-135 more suited for the MF165 and 265 and mine has a welded front axle from where its been broken.

You have to read the owner's manual to understand the three point and to see if it works. Basically, there are two controls, one for draft and one for position. The three point should lift with both at the top and go down when either lever goes down. If the three point shakes, there's an adjustment for that. Though it could signify a couple pump cylinders having failed. My three point won't lift as much as the loader will and the loader is so long it easily lifts the back of the tractor if I get too much load in the bucket.

Otherwise you need to check ordinary engine checks, oil quality and quantity, exhaust smoke, starting. Check to see that the transmission shifts (mine has three shift levers, so its confusing at first) and that the clutch releases and holds well. Tires affect the price. 11 years ago I paid 3950 with a 2 bottom case plow thrown in. Guess I could make money now. But I'm moving the loader to the JD4020 that's replaced the MF-135 in my farming operation.

I found that the MF-135 does everything well that the 8N aspired to do such as plowing and field work and wasn't capable of doing. Now I find the 4020 for about the same price (without loader) is far more capable than the 135 and allows cultivating crops nearly 3 feet tall which does show in the quality of crop this year.
