MF 35 system stopped charging.

Murphy's law dictates that stuff happens when it is cold, almost dark and far away from tools.

MF 35 gas. The generator brush area appeared to have an accumulation of trash resembling several rats nests and appeared to be the most suspect area. 11.3 volts at the battery while running at governor speed. Generator is now off and the battery is on charge.

What is the proper method to get to the brushes to clean out the mess? The small tachometer gear is preventing removal of the generator rear end cap. What is the proper method for removing the tachometer gear?

Thanks.
