OK fellows, I'm looking for a remote diagnosis of a sick tractor. My old M-F 65 diesel has come up with a bad case of "smoking" this spring. Tractor always did smoke a little on start up (and then clear up) but now it smokes continually. Tractor sat all winter. Changed
engine oil/filter and trans/hyd/diff oil. Bad smoking seemed to start all at once. Any ideas on where to go from here. Use it for little plowing, discing etc but not hard. Is it worth fixing?

First thing I would check is the inlet manifold heater....they can stick open and leak raw fuel into the cylinders, remove the heater plug and see if the inside of the manifold is wet..(unburnt fuel which shouldn"t be there in the first place)...try connecting the manifold heater to the pipe and run the engine with the heater outside the manifold and see if there is any fuel leaking from it.....I have experienced this situation many times.....Geoff

Thanks for the pointer; as I'm unfamiliar with diesels this never occurred to me. I'll check it out.

If its oil smoke (obvious by smell) then I'd be looking at a possible broken ring. In that case, engine damage that should be looked at without putting any more hours on it. Diesel blue, could be as simple as a gasket in the injector pump or a bad injector. Either way, if it started all the sudden, I'd be getting all over finding out why without putting another hour on it.

Broken ring was my first thought; definitely blue smoke i.e. oil. With the oil filler cap off or the dip stick out; that's where it pours out. Thanks for the tip.

Have you run it long enough to warm it up? Maybe the thermostat is stuck open, and not allowing it to reach operating temp. My dad's 65 has always smoked when you first start it up, but once warm it clears right up.

I'd say take it out and work it good and hard. I'd be very surprised if it didn't clear up.

Start with the easy things first. Is the fuel good? Are the filters clean, air and fuel. What color is the smoke?

I'll second this.
Why spend time looking at anything else until you get rid of the dirty fuel filters and make sure there isn't any dirt, water & air anywhere in the system.
Makes the rest easy to work with.
Wouldn't hurt to give it a quick greasing too.
Be tractor safe
Brian

Sure appreciate all the input. Air and fuel are good but haven't gotten around to the fuel filters this year. Color is blue.

Hi.

Do you have a lot of blowing out of the breather pipe, or if you open the oil filler cap when the engine runs ? That indicates stuck rings (or worn rings). Maybe it needs a good hard drive, but gradually and after it has reached working temperature.
If it was not smoking in the fall, but smoking now in the spring something is most likely stuck from sitting too long.

Of course a MF 65 is worth repairing. It is an excellent tractor.

Bill

Yes Bill, it just pours out the oil filler opening. The fact that it increased so much so quickly makes me think a stuck or broken ring also. I've run it for 30 minutes and it doesn't clear up anymore. Thank the Lord I don't depend on these tractors for a living. Just got my Dad's old 2N running but obviously it can't do what the 65 did. Thanks
Jim B
