I am getting an oil pressure fluctuation corresponding to throttle position. I am also getting water in my oil. Is there an easy way to tell if it is head gasket or worse cracked block? If I change oil pressure stabalizes for a couple uses.

More likely a warped head.

You may have a cracked/leaking oil pickup tube and the oil pump maybe sucking air. This can be a cause for oil pressure fluctuations.

With regard to water/coolant in the engine oil, that can be caused by a cracked block, a leaking cylinder sleeve O-Ring, a blown head gasket or possibly a cracked head or a clogged breather tube. It"s normal during cool times of the year to see a few droplets on the oil fill cap but I"m assuming that"s not what you are talking about
First make sure that your breather tube is not clogged. If it is, it can keep the blowby gases in the crankcase and the water vapor will condense in the oil. You also may find oil in the distributor when this happens since the crankcase gets somewhat pressurized with a clogged breather.

Run a compression check and see if you have two adjacent cylinders that are low. You can also try retorqing the head to see if that helps the situation. If the water persists, pull the pan after draining the oil and put a clean newpaper under the engine and look for coolant dripping. You can look up and see where the drips are coming from.

Hope this helps you.

the water will thin your oil and the pump wiil reflect that in the guage pressure. headgasket or crack ? most head gaskets involve overheating and several cracks only put water in the oil , however i have seen both do both . pull the head and have it mag-ed . goog luck
