My neighbour up here in Ontario, Canada, has a David Brown of 1970's vintage. When it gets really cold, his hydraulics won't work and he has been told there must be a bit of water in the fluid which settles in the bottom of the pan and freezes when temperature goes below a certain level blocking the hydraulic filter. His question to me was - is there any type of antifreeze that you can add to hydraulic fluid to prevent it from freezing to save having to change all of the fluid? I guess he is thinking of something similar to gas line antifreeze that works for hydraulic fluid.

I told him the MF guys are experts and if there is such a thing, they would know!

To the best of my knowledge no. Hydralic oil is made to separate the water thats why it collects in the bottom. (most likely from condensation)I would fit the drain plug with a small 1/4 turn valve then you can drain off the water easily. I have seen this system commonly used on construction equip. for years. hope this helps.
