I'm working on an oil bath air filter on a MF 65 diesel tractor. Someone has pulled out a lot of the metal mesh out of the filter. They replaced it with screen wire and possibly steel wool. This has worked its way towards the top of what is left of the original mesh and will eventually be pulled into the engine. The original mesh was rolled up in a sheet and placed in the filter. Does anyone know of a source for this original mesh or know of a material that can be substituted that will not come apart and be drawn into the engine? I like the oil bath filters, but as a last resort I will change over to a paper disposable filter. All ideas are appreciated.

Try copper pot scrubbers. Just try to get pads with the same density as whats in the filter. If your not worried about looks, get a round air breather off a big V8, complete with top plate, then plug the hole that fits on the carb with a plate. Put a hole the same size as your inlet air tube in the plate then braze
a flange on it to clamp a flex tube. Tuck the whole thing under the tin. You now
have a breather that's easier to maintain and just
as effective.

Blue.

the early 165 had a oil bath air cleaner....might be able to find parts of one of those..... might fit

or the late 165 had a paper element filter..... you might be able to convert the 65 to fit it.....the mounting points in the front of the early and late 165's were the same.....and the 165 was the follow on from the 65..... .they should fit

Thanks for all the info. I found some stainless steel scrubbers that look like they will do the trick. They are like scrubbing pads, real tough and they will not break into pieces. The dry filter conversion also seems like a good way to go. Thanks again,
CAM
