I have heard about some of the last MM J's coming out of the factory with RE engines in them. Does anybody have any ideas why MM would have done this. I know of one that is the 75th to the last on made with an RE engine in, but also one that is newer than that, and it has a waukesha engine in it. Anybody have any ideas. Thanks

John, what size rear rims does your JT have? I have one that has a 6 x 36 inch rim that is bad. Would like to find at least a bad one that I could get a section of to repair mine.

Also if anyone out there knows of one I would appreciate any leads.

thanks

I've got 16.9x36" on mine, it has cast centers and we widened the rims to 14". Is yours on cast centers, cutoffs, or pressed steel wheels? That'll make it easier for someone to know if they have the rim you're looking for.

I'm not saying that MM never factory installed RE engines, but I do have a copy of a service bulletin that tells how to retrofit an RE engine into a JT, so a lot of people must have done it. The bulletin says the radiator has to be shimmed up on steel blocks, and the fuel tank shimmed up as well. It suggests using wood blocks under the fuel tank. You might look to see if the radiator inlet and outlet have been reworked as well.
Even with the RE engine in them, they are still a pretty nice MM tractor.

I would love to have a copy of that service bulletin. I have a J/RE that was apart when I got it, and I would like to put back to as close to original as possible. If or anyone else would be willing to make me a copy I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

joe

So if the radiator hasn't been changed it's factory? What about the battery? Thanks

My '37 JTU w/RE has the aforementioned blocks under the radiator and the fuel tank. It was Prairie Gold from the factory and all the welds on the front frame look machine welded. I have an origional of the instruction sheet to install the RE in the J. It will take some time, but I can copy and send it to you Joe. Be in mid Nov. John

Forgot, the radiator outlets have not been reworked, the lower hose kinda kinks, but coools. She has a 220 (bored 206) ZB and pulls 12' wheel disc and 3x14" plow anywhere with cast rear wheel centers and 2 sets of weights, weighs #5500. Got frontend weights too to keep it on the ground. This engine has been in it for 6 years and now needs rings again. John

Wow! Dad's ZB only weighs 5000# and it has a load with a 8' disk.

But I forgot. My ZTU can pull our Athens Bog harrow in a higher gear than the ZB can. Its got a 206 with kerosene head. They must have geared the early ones lower.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the RE engine about 187 cubic inches?

RE engine is 186 or 7" If you put a RE226C (gasoline head)on that 206, it'll pull much better. More compression = more horsepower.

John,
I agree to a point. With the heads on these things you can get too much comp for regular pump gas. I have a 220 in an R that has the 2647 head. It runs ok for light work on 87 octane, but for pulling I go to 92 or 93 to prevent knocking. My Zb has a 223 and a 226C head that I milled .0125 off of. It is the same way , but not as bad. I plowed with it last weekend, and it knocked just a very little in the really thick clay with 89 octane in the tank. So I guess what I am saying is compression plus octane = HP.

Joe

P.S. I hope to have my JT running by next spring!
