I have a 66 Jet 3 Super Diesel. I need to make it start better in cold wheather. It runs well, but like most Moline diesels, if it gets below 50 degrees, you'd better be looking for the ether. It has been rebuilt with .040 over pistons. I am considering options like an ether aid, glow plugs, block heaters, Injector modifications...etc. Does anyone have any experience/success with this ? Any input would be appreciated.

I would by a couple of cords of wood and just build a huge fire under it. It will either start or burn to the ground, either way, problem is gone.....

Sounds to me like you should scrap it if it is that hard to start. Either that or buy ether by the gross....

A block heater would be the best choise. You and get a smaller watt heater that would go in place of one of the freeze plugs or get a tank heater. I like the tank type personaly because it pumps the hot water through the entire engine and not mainly in one area. In all the parts books at work on the Jet Star Diesels I have never seen a glow plug system offered. I dont like using starting fluid if posible. One of the mechanics at work calls starting fluid "The breath of death". Why he says it is over time it will kill the engine quicker. We have a snowblower mounted on a JD tractor and it has the tank type heater and it works great.

I disagree that ether is always an "engine killer". It doesn't seem to hurt if used in moderation, and only while the engine is cranking. I had a 1550 Oliver with busted preheater, that I started for 20 years with ether- sold it to a neighbor who fixed the preheater, and now it starts without ether.

You are correct if you use it the way you did. The problem is there are a lot of people new to diesel engines and they dont always have the engine cranking when starting or tend to use to much starting fluid. One thing people need to check on before using starting fluid is to make sure their glow plugs are not turned ON if they have them on their tractor. This could cause some damage quick. Starting fluid is ok if used properly but it can easily be over used. One thing I forgot to mention earlier of a added plus for engine heaters is the oil is warmer so it will lubricate the engine better at startup. This can help make the engine last longer.

Welter's farm equipment at Verona, MO might have the answer. For example, on big Moline diesels; as the valves wear down in their seats it will lower compression just enough to make starting harder. I would have the compression checked. Are you up to full cranking speed? On any old diesel I follow the proceedure John Deere had for the diesel 2 cylinders--FIRST CRANK ENGINE WITH THE FUEL (THROTTLE) IN OFF POSITION. AFTER CRANKING A FEW SECONDS, BEGIN SLOWLY ADVANCING THE THROTTLE. Kind of a cheap and dirty way to preheat the motor. I have a M-670 diesel with low original hrs, and it starts very good. Which is why I insist on checking that all is up to specs.

Put a block heater in it and that will fix your problem
