Ok lets settle this once and for all what are the corect hedlights to have on a UTU and a UTS. I think the ealy tractors had the larger headlights I.E. solid block tractors. What about the later units? I have a set of I think they are 6and 1/4 in diameter on a UTS and my neighbor says they are not the righ ones they are two big and are suppose to be on a UTU. And the comment was a UTS had the smaler i believe 5and 1/4 headlights which is correct? i think somebody by the name of Cortez is remanufacturing the smaller 5and 1/4 like I think is on the UB's What is correct and true as deliverd from the factory? Thanks T-D

Just posted some info on correct lights for a ZA ( ZA Questions ) I believe all models would have had the change at about the same time. As far as I know the UB's and UTS's used the same lights. As was stated whatever the front end--- same lights.

I think there was a switch around 49 or 50 from the large flat lense lights to smallar domed lense. I have heard ,(but not confirmed) that there was a switch in fenders at the same time. If a tractor has smooth clamshells it should have older larger flat lensed lights; tractors with ribbed clamshells came with smaller domed headlights. If someone has heard this or something different I would like to know if this is a story or correct. I don't think it mattered if it was a UTU,UTS or Z's and R's for that matter. UB's and ZB's ran sealed beam lights.

I think Moline used the same size headlights on all of their 6 volt tractors - UTU and UTS included.

It was 1953 when Moline went to a 12 volt negative ground system. Some one with a parts book should be able to check and see if the UB had the same light as the UTU with a 12 volt lamp in it.

I don't know when the switch was made from the flat lens to the convex lens, but the size of the light stayed the same.

I have a UtU and just got it back up and running. I need more info on it.. It has a serial Number 3189??. It also has a solid head instead of split ones. I'm also looking for to fron lights.. Do the make 6 volt repro's that are cheaper than 100.00 a piece. Thanks

Kevin,
From your partial serial number you've got a 1944 U. The one piece head is correct for a 1944. The two piece head (283-4) engine came out midway through 1947. I don't believe anyone is reproducing the old 7" flat lens light assemblies that your U would have come with originally. Good used ones usually go for about $75 a piece.

I belive you r right, something didn't make sense when my neighbor comented on having differant size light on a utu and uts. Why would they do that it would make no sense on the supply end of things at all. UB's I could see newer and better technology. The UTU and UTS I have are both mid fifties units, and the UTS I just bought was complete in every way with the larger domed headlights. I am still curiouse about this because it seems to be a big contoversy at shows "Hey that guy doesn't have the right size lights on his tractor ect ect" Thanks T-D

TD,

If you're not worried about how "originally correct" your tractor is, I would just leave the lights that are on it. All I can say about the "perfect police" on tractors would be if you like the way it looks, then keep it that way. There's a couple things on my molines that are probably not correct for originality, but they suit me just fine. I have a '53 UTS. I don't think it has original headlights, but they sure are bright (12 volt). Hope this helps. Greg in MI
