I read somewhere that one could take an electronic ignition out of a GM 4 cylinder & modify it to fit a Z engine. Anyone have any info on this?

We sell Pertronix Ignitors, have installed about a hundred here in the area, including 10 on our own equipment. Have put all of them in the OEM distributors with our resistor coil, all are very happy with them, only one failure, the guys cows chewed the wires and when he went to start the tractor it shorted out. Ever once in a while someone starts a thread about them cheap units and why their ideas are better but at this point we've not seen anything better for the money and ease of installation. Dale

Search www.pertronix.com . They make electronic ignition sets that fit into your OEM distributor.
If they do not show your model , call them.

There was a whole thread on electronic ignition a while back. You might want to look at it.

Personally, I wonder why you would want to do this.

Here's my two cents: First, you need an electronic ignition distribuitor that has both mechanical advance that matches your engine and has counterclockwise rotation as viewed from the rotor button. Then you find a machinist who can cut down the HEI distribuitor housing to fit in your MM distribuitor mount and cut the shaft to fit in your MM distribuitor coupling.

I can't recall what a HEI distribuitor looks like for a 4 cylinder, but I'm pretty sure that the v-8 size distribuitor won't fit between either the block or the fan mount or the air cleaner, depending on whichever is closer.

Oh, by the way-If your Z has a magneto, you're going to have to change the oil pump drive and driven gears, or you can use a gear reduction from a distribuitor equipped Farmall, such as a cub. But you still have to modify the drive coupling to fit.
