The bushing locked up on the gear and gauled the gear driven shaft. Now I need a new bushing and maybe build the shaft up

The shims go between the water pump and the steel front cover. I believe the shims along with the brass thrust collar on the back of the water pump control the end play of the distributor drive shaft. I don't remember the proper clearance but it is in the I&T manuals which are of course up in the garage.

I'd have to say that we don't know what you mean by "shiming the pump", as there are no replies to your post. The thing that comes to mind is that the rebuilder, or whatever didn't assemble the pump correctly. What makes you think you should shim the pump? I'm not an expert on this engine, but there must be a reason for the extra heat in this area. Is the new pump the origin of the "heat"? My 2 cents, John

1. First get an I&T or MM service manual, to verify what I am telling you is correct. 2. The new water pump should have came with a shim kit, which installs on the driven end flange of the pump. The flange is what bolts up to the engine. 3. Take cover off the impellor. 4. Press against the impellor while holding the housing, you should see the brass ring on the driven end rise about 1/16" (give or take). This is the internal endplay of the impellor which is established at assembly. 5. Make sure brass ring and driving shaft tang is free of burrs. 6. Install all of the shims between pump flange and motor. Secure nuts firmly. 7. Use a dial indicator to check how far the impellor will now depress IN with the pump installed. On my G-900 gas, I believe the tolerance is about .018 8. If endplay is excessive, It will mess with your ignition timing. If too little, you end up with a galled up mess.

A note to everyone: I must humbly state that by no means am I an expert technician. But you all can save yourselves un-needed grief and expense by first getting a service manual and studying what you are about to undertake. IF YOU ARE STILL UNSURE ASK, ASK, Then ASK AGAIN.
