Is their anyway to make a 53 UB look like a UB Special? I don't know if this is the right thing to do but I love the look of UB Specials but I don't have one. My grandpa had two of them but one burnt up and the other one he sold after he restored it. I tried buying it back but the new owner won't sell it.
Thanks,
Trever

Any chance the burnt UBSp is still around there?
If so, does the steering gear and hubs turn?

I'm restoring a 'previously' burnt ZB. The steering gear was one of the parts I couldn't save. Apparrently the fire had burnt all the grease out of the bearings and it was frozen solid.

I think you could change the hood and front end-grille, radiator and all-from a UBspecial to a U. If you do this, don't forget to get the bars or framework that goes alongside the engine that mount to the steering gear. I don't know, the fan shaft might be different as well.

It'd be one of those tractors MM never made. Kinda like the UB I saw in Ohio that had UTS axles front and rear.

Thanks Kelvin.
Is it a good idea or a bad idea? It's cheaper than buying a UB Special, but then what would people think when they look at the serial number plate. I guess I just like the grille. Why didn't UB's have those grilles? ZB's, ZAU's, R's, and GB's did. So why not UB's?

Sorry, the UB Special burnt up before I was even around. It was brand new too. A guy had borrowed it from my grandpa for an unknown reason. That day my grandpa saw the fire trucks go by his place. Apparently the guy tyed tire's behind the tractor, soaked them in gas or diesel, lit them on fire, and dragged them behind the tractor in a bean field to burn the windrows. Apparently there must have been a leak in the gas tank so it caught on fire. My grandpa had some good insurance on it though. I think he ended up getting like a brand new M5 or a Jetstar with the insurance money he collected.

But that would be nice if I could turn that into a UB Special.

Trever,
Good luck finding the parts necessary to convert it. The only reason Moline changed the UB grille was because they added the power steering to the front pedestal and that required a bolt in radiator core. You'll need the front pedestal, radiator core, top cast radiator tank, hood, and I'm not sure but you may need a different water manifold to line up with the radiator tank. If you find all these parts you might as well by the whole tractor and rebuild it then you'll have a real UB Special instead of a look a like.

By the way the R never had a bar grille like the UB special. All R's had a red nose grille screen.

Thanks. I don't know where I found that info on the R. Truth is that I can't find a UB Special. My grandpa had two of them like I said but the new owner doesn't want to sell it. There not too easy to find.

Does a G or a ZAU have the same front end as a UB Special?

Trever,
The Specials are out there. Just keep yours eyes open and be patient. I found our UBD Special last fall from an add in the Prarie Gold Rush. It was only 25 minutes from home. There's got to be more of them in Minnesota than here in Michigan.

I know the G front end will not be anything like a U and I'm not certain but I think the Z front end may be completely different also. Beyond that you're going to need a UB Special hood and my experience here in Michigan is that they're hard to come by.

Thanks. If you want you could do some searching for me. When I mentioned the G and the ZAU I was only going by the design of the grill. That's what I like about them the best. How much did you pay for that UBD Special?

No, G's and ZAU's never had the same front as a UBspecial. Actually, I think that particular front end was unique to the UBspecial and only perhaps internal parts were shared with 5stars.

I would just be patient. There are UB specials out there and they do come up for sale on the web sites. The UB special has a totally different front end than UB's, (the interchange able fronts) different steering, and a visibaly differnent oil pan and oil pump on the engine.
