What wheels from other makes will fit a late 40's model Z?

I assume you are talking about pressed steel wheels. I bought new Ford aftermarket pressed steel wheels for my 1950 ZA. They came Ford gray, but I painted them MM Cherry red. From memory I think the tire size is 6.00 X 16 inch. Ford tractor wheels are a perfect match for fit. (The aftermarket company did not list MM and someone had told me to use the Ford number) John Deere wheels almost fit, however the center hole on JD is slightly smaller than Ford and MM. You can use a JD wheel if you take a round file and open up the center just slightly. JD will bolt onto a MM, but the lug nuts will force the center hole over the hub so tightly that it will not come off.

As you can see from my description, MM and Ford front wheels will work on JD, but JD will not work on MM or Ford without some center work.
Good luck,
John

What John says is correct, if your tractor uses a rim with the 4-5/8" center hole. Early MM Z's had rims with a smaller hole, and I don't know when they changed.
One thing: If your tractor is narrow front, a Ford rim really has too much offset and the tire will drag on the center post. The front rim from about a 420 John Deere is a better choice and is practically identical if not absolutely identical to what MM used.
The rim John is talking about is what JD used on A's or B's.
