Gentlemen I need help: I just got a m.m. utu the eng plate says model 4 1/4 x 5 283A4. The I.T. manual says it has 3 comp rings and 1 oil ring and one of my parts books agree. However, my problem is the piston measures 4 3/8 in. and the top comp ring is 3/32. The next two are 1/8 and the next oil ring is 1/4 and it has another oil ring 1/4 at bottom of skirt. The top of the piston is stamped STD. 8A. Does anyone have any idea what someone has done to this engine or where I might be able to buy some piston rings? Not many m.m. parts here in Idaho. I tried Napa Auto and had no luck. Thanks for any info.

Dave is right on the money. They are M&W pistons. Hastings does still make ring sets for these too. When you get it back together it is not going to sound the same as a regular U pistons in them. You will be able to the tell a difference. I got my set from Everett's in Ohio.

Welter's in Missouri seems to be everyone's answer for MM engine parts. I don't have their address and can't find the phone number that I had. You might look thru the archives because your question has surfaced several times. Also if you can find a parts store that has Hastings rings they can get them easily. That's what I did on my UTS last winter. I remember them listing two different styles of rings.

A G-900 diesel has 4 3/8 bore. Get the casting number off the cyl. jugs and some one here can tell what you got. Or maybe M&W had a over bore kit that size.Temco also offered over bore kits
