i have 48 rtu and venturie freezes up then tractor quits then i have to choke it and it starts right up what can i do to cure this peter

They all do that to some degree. This is the first I heard that would cause one to stall. What altitude are you working at?
Do you know if your R has an LP manifold installed? gasoline manifolds allow more heat transfer to the intake side.
Really, I think if its really frozen, choking won't do much. What you probably have is poor fuel delivery. I would check and make sure you have a good steady stream of fuel to the carbruretor. If I was sure I had a good steady supply, I would check for trash in the carburetor.
