we have a 445 with the A/T. When you shift it it will click into the low range I believe but after about 30 seconds it acts like it doesn't want to pull itself. Seems to be worse in 3rd gear than any of the others. I was told that there is an adjustment on the tractor for it but since I have no book I am not sure. Also where do you check the fluid level for it and what type of fluid does it use?

Any help is appreciated!

You most likely need a springs/rollers replacement. When these things slip as much as you say anything you do with fluids at this time will most likely not help anymore, the mechanical damage already has been done. These things are very dependable but sometimes abuse/misuse in the past cannot be reversed with fluids, only replacing worn parts. When doing this procedure look REAL close at the hub where the springs/rollers work on, the cage where the springs/rollers work from, and the cage where the discs live, Any questions just ask us, we can help, just did a Jet Star last Friday. Later model MM's use a sprague clutch and that repair is somewhat different. Thanks, Dale

Jeff is correct that there is no adjustment for the low side but it could not be working because of low oil or more likely it has been damaged by someone using it before warming it up.

Oil can be added thru the 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" plug in the top of the transmission cover. The tractor should be driven some distance (1/4 to 1/2 mile) before checking the level at the plug on the side of the case. The oil should be there as well as at the check plug on the side of the rear end housing.

If it is over the plug on the side of the TA case and not at the one on the rear end, keep checking at both until the oil is just at the bottom of the one on the trans. If oil is still not at the rear one, you have to add some oil.

If it is over the rear one and not at the front one, you haven't driven it far enough.

Oil is effectively thrown into the front compartment by the gears when driven & drains back into the trans/rear end through the bearings when sitting.

There is no adjustment for the low side. I use 80 90 gear oil in my tractors. There is a pipe plug on the right side of the tractor near the brake pedals. This is where you check the oil. Just below the fuel tank there is a large flat washer looking deal with a 9/16 bolt in the middle of it. This is the place to put oil in and adjust the high side. Make sure you give the oil time to warm up before using the low side. If it is not wanting to work even when warm you will have to split the tractor.
