Have been checking this board over the last few months and have seen very few questions about M5 tractors. My dad had one and I've spent many hours running it and also the G1000 we had. They were both (sniff) sold at his auction. I was wondering how many M5's were built, how collectable and what the general opinion is of them. I work as a mech. for a John Deere dealer now but there will always be a soft spot in my heart for MM tractors. Our old M5 was a gas burner and the G1000 was LP. Both were indestructable and very reliable. Thanks

I had a good M5 standard Lp until two weeks ago. It had over 9000 hours, I am sure it had it's problems along the way but it ran out to be a pretty solid tractor. In central Illinois M5 is a common MM, I know of eleven in the county!

We have two gas M-5's one narrow front row crop and a M-5 standard with a heavy duty wide front and an IH 2000 loader on it. Both have been real good tractors over the years, both with 10,000+++ hours on them now and many overhauls along the way. Problem with our two is that they are just about slam wore out after being our big tractors for years a years. We still use them a little for small jobs like driving posts and pulling wagons, but we leave the heavy work for the bigger disels now. The narrow front one really gets to leaking water out of the heads if you pull her too hard anymore, I guess they are a little warped or have a crack somewhere. You can see them on my site if you want to, but definatly a good model of tractor....

We used to own a 1962 MM M-5 LP burner with NF,15.5x38's,Ampli-torc,3pt,etc.The only trouble we ever had with it was one cracked head.It was a good old tractor and walked right along with a 3x16 MM plow.

A year ago I saw a nice MM M-5 gas burner sell on a sale for $2500.M-5's are scarce around here.

Was the M5 the predesessor to the M670? Did it use the big four cylinder? I have a M670 and love it.

The M-5 had the 4 cyl 336 engine. The 602 came between the M-5 and the 670 and 602 both also used the 336. The 670 had newer cyl head which were not as prone to crack.

JDOUG,
The M-5 was made from 1960 to 1963. Gasoline and LP tractors shared the same serial numbers and there were 5157 made combined. There were 2656 diesels made in the same time period. There were also a very limited # of 4wd M5s produced. They were designated M-504 and only 10 gas/LP and 21 diesels were made in 1962 only. The M5 was a very good tractor and many are still in use today. In fact I know of some M5s with over 10,000 hours and still going.
The G1000 was made in Row Crop, Wheatland and Vista models from 1965 to 1969. Not all G1000 models were made every year. What did your dad have? Wheatland, row crop or Vista?
I've got a 62 M5 Standard, 66 G1000 Row Crop and 68 Vista - all diesels. They're great tractors.

M5 was a very good tractor I have two,and one has over 20,000 hours on it. I've "retired" that one and am restoring it, so it will only have parade duty now. Also have a 602 and it is basicly the same tractor only a little different paint and tin work. Also have a UB Special, and they are all LPG. Harold

The G1000 we had was a row-crop LP. We took it to a local tech school one winter to have them go over it and repair anything that was needed. It kind of torqued them off because they could'nt really find anything wrong with it to use as a lab project for their students. I can still remember plowing at night with it and watching the muffler glow a beautiful shade of red. Thanks for the quick follow up BMG., Doug

y'know, we don't see many posts about them. They must not give a lot of trouble-even about 40 years later.
