I was curious if any good MM folks new how much different the hoods were between the 1939-40 model Rs and the later years with the regular gas tank. Was the 39' narrower in the back or not? What about other mechanical differences between 39' models and 40s-50s machines?

The rearends on the later R's were a bit stronger I am told. I think someone told me once that the later ones had 4 bolts on the pinion where the earlier ones had 2.

Im not sure if the earlier hoods are narrower or not but I do know that the later model hoods have slits at the rear of the hood to make room for the 2 piece tank flange. also the 49 and later hoods abandoned the side curtains all together and are of one piece contstruction.

Yes, the '39 and early '40 hoods are narrower than hoods on later R's.

Is the front width of the hood the same? Did all R's have the same grill and radiator width? Just considering if my radiator and grill off a 47' will work on a 39'. Thanks!

Ethan, you will be fine with the '47 radiator shell and grill on your '39; radiator itself should be good to go, too. Any radiator shell and grill off a Z will work, too. In other words, they are the same. Hope this helps.

Jim
