Head bolt torque values.

The engine I'm working on is in the M5 diesel, the D336. I'm wondering why there is a difference in head bolt torque from one side of the engine to the other. I understand the 9/16" studs would be torqued less than the 5/8" studs - buy why the difference between left and right side on the 5/8"? I'm considering replacing the studs with new ARP studs, but don't want to overtorque them if there was sealing problems, or thermal expansion problems. Does anyone have any design history with this engine? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks, Mike

Mike the last torque specs were for 170 on big bolts and 135 on small ones. If you don't tighten them equally in a circular motion you run the risk of distorting valve seats and cracking head.

I have a 57' 5-star with the D336 engine in it. I was told the there had been a update on the head bolts from the factory to torque them all to the 125 to 130 ft. pound range on the 5/8" studs. I was told this by a MM dealer and I done it five years ago and no problems.
