How do you tell if you have a ZAE or a ZBN, ect. I know the first letter is the model but after that I am lost. I am trying to find a Moline close to southern Indiana that is in good condition, and am going this weekend to try and buy one. Like to have a little knowledge before examining it. I have been mostly into Oliver and John Deere, some Farmall, but new to MM. Thanks for the info in advance.

ZT tractor are the older tractors, '36-'48 these have a red grille, and are hand clutch.
ZA tractors are newer. starting in '49 and running through '53. These have a cast rad. with a flat front bar grille. ZA tractors are also hand clutch.
ZB tractors are the last Z tractors built. '53-'55 The front of the ZB is the same as a ZA. but the ZB is a foot Clutch tractor and has a higher platform and a steering wheel that is centerd on the tractor. (on ZT and ZA lower platform and steering wheel and steering shaft are on drivers left of center.
For the last letter.
"U" is for the two front tires close togather
"N" is for a single front tire
"E" is for an adjustable wide front
"S" is for a standard wide front
"I" is for industrial.

Hope that this helps
Mike

Thanks for clearing up something I have wondered about for a long time. One more question tho. I have one that should be a ZAN but only shows Z. Also have one that should be RTI-M but only shows R on the SN plate. Also I had also assumed the RTE had the extended front axle. Can you clear this up for me? Thanks, Jack

Hey now, that is 2 questions. ZA? are serial numbered different for the different frontends. ZT? the U and N frontends are all togather some are marked with a U or N on the tag, but not all.
Front ends are easy to swap. I've got a ZB with a ZBU serial number that has the E style frontend.
On the RTI-M. I also have a RTI-M that is stamped with R on the tag, with a RTI serial #. I've beeen told, but haven't found any paper to conferm, that the Uncle Sam bought additional batches of RTI-Ms but not all batches bought were stamped with the M. Mine has the lift hooks, the large brass tag under the gas tank with the lifting inst. and the to spots on the fender where the two tags should be. (they are probally on some one's shop wall) You also assumed right, RTE has the adj. wide frontend.

Thanks for clearing up some more SN tag questions. My RTI-M also has the brass tag under the gas tank and one on the fender that shows the crating dimensions and wts. The one on the other fender is missing. Any idea what that one said? Thanks, Jack
