I am interested in finding a good MM project tractor. I don't know any thing about the MM's, all I have is JD's. I like the looks and size of the R and RT. Is this a good model to start with? How easy is it to find one? I don't want to start looking for a rare and pricey MM. Are there any problems I should look out for on these models?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike where are you located? I know of an RTU in Central Ohio that may be available.

I have a 1950 RTU Moline that I would sale. It runs but not strong. Does not have good tires. Are you interested in something like that? I'm in southwest Missouri.

Mike,
Moline made over 20,000 R models in various configurations from 1939 to 1954. The RTU with the narrow front is the most common by a long shot. I would suggest looking for one that the motor is not stuck as you can spend a few dollars on an R engine if its in rough shape. Parts are harder to come by compared to JD. Look for one with good rear rims. 34 & 36" R rims can be difficult to find but not impossible. There were 2 different rear rim center hole openings depending on year. A good radiator shroud/grille that's not rusted out at the bottom is a plus also along with a good useable hood. Early models had the hinged/louvered hood sides and later models had a one piece non-louvered hood. You may consider a ZT too which was similar in styling but weighed a little more. I've got 9 MM Rs in my collection so if you've got any specific questions just ask. I'm sure I or someone else on this board can answer them for you.

Price range in the midwest seems to be a couple hundred for a parts tractor to a couple thousand for a very nice original or restored example. You should be able to find a good R in your price range.

Brian
