I have a MM model Z. The serial # tag was very lightly stamped, has rusted, and been rubbed hard; bottom line I can't read all the numbers. I can read the block serial #. Is there a cross reference? Any suggestions for enhancing the readability of the faint markings? Thanks.

Tim,

Post the serial number of the engine and we can tell you what year that was made, tractor more than likely will be the same. If that fails there are other ways.

I can read enough of the serial # tag (starts with 0061) to know that it is a 1952. Only need the rest of it to satisfy my curiosity. Is it likely to be legible from the back? Is there any method for bringing out the faint numbers? Did MM keep track of which block # went to which tractor serial #? Is that info available now? Thanks.
Tim

Tim, Sometimes you can make out the numbers from the back side but usually the back is as rusty as the front. You can try making a pencil rubbing of the tag or rub some chalk over it and it should fill in the lows. This may help you make out some more numbers. I've also had some success with a very bright light held at a sharp angle to the tag. It has a tendency to shadow the numbers if they're still there. I'm not aware of any MM records correlating the block serial # to the tractor serial #. If such a list is out there I would have thought it would have come out by now.

I got the impression reading Rod Beemer's book that at least some of the engine serial numbers were recorded by year.
I'll bet your Z is a '49 or a '50. what we call a ZA. I've got 2 with steel id tags and neither can be read either.
Does your ZA by chance have a white Minneapolis-Moline decal on the hood? I think that would make it a '49.
