Having trouble getting my UB, 1953, to run properly, thought it eas governor, tried another and still not right, will not come back to idle when reved up, does not matter if it is under load or not, does not appear to be any adjustments on the governor, carb is good and clean, butterfly free and closes well, any help?

Ben, I had similar problems with my 1953 UB. I had installed a different (used) governor and carb. The gov. needed to be replaced, the carb. did not. After MUCH trial and error, I started from square one with the gov. adjust and then the carb.adjust as descibed in my IT repair book. (the gov. adjust is VERY touchy,as I recall)Upon completing both adjustments sequentially, the engine purred like a kitten and developed 48 HP the next day on a PTO dyno.
Moral of story?, sometimes it pays to just wipe the slate clean and go to the basics.
Good luck,
JM

Try lengthening the rod from gov to carb. If your rod isn't adjustable make one that is. This is assuming the carb butterfly is free and no binding linkages.

Ben,

I had this problem with my UB after I rebuilt the carb. It roared when fired up and it would not idle back down. If memory serves, it was in the carburetor. Double check your venturi and make sure each passage is clean. Squirt carb cleaner with a straw in each passage and double check the needle seats.
