I was talking with Clint Stamm a while back and he was doing a restoration on a udlx. his words on this is that they have and what I seen is that they have two shifters and a governor override that made them so fast.He said the secound shifter can't be shifted in to until the first shifter is put in neutral. this allows the complete bypass of the transmission with a mechanism to direct drive the engine to the ring gear and pinion. He also said besides that, they were pretty normal industrial u parts, brakes on the axles. not on the bull pinions. like big truck brakes.

not to start anything but was at roger mohr's place some time ago in vail and looked at his udlx..he said the udlx's had 2 transmissions to enable them to reach the speeds they did..not just a ring and pinion..i looked and it had one in front of the other..dont know how this was accomplished but thats what he said and i think he is pretty much an authority on these things..certainly has an impressive collection

The serial number for the last transmission like the UDLX and early U's was 327400. That rearend was used last in 1946. The rearend castings are also differen't between the 327400 and prior transmission verses the transmissions after 327400. The ring gear and pinion is what makes 5th faster.

for some reasion this wont leave the table up here so you have to go to the bottom to see it. nebraska tractor test results

Just a thought, if it is the ring gear and pinion ratio that makes 5th gear faster, would not all of the gears be faster. All output to the rear axles goes through these gears.

The speed for all the gears are differen't. The gears in the transmission are differen't giving them differen't ratios.

I do not know the serial number range but you can tell them by the shifter pattern. On a regular MM U the top row of the shift pattern is 2-1-5. On the high speed units it is 2-3-5. I believe the high speeders were only made in the one piece block/head era. That is the sum of the little I know.

I've heard stories,(but nothing confirmed) that the High speed UTS' were UDLX rearends that were assembled in anticipation for huge sales. When the UDLX flopped, MM used them up in UTS' UDLX had a governer override to hit 40MPH. I would guess that's why the high speed UTS won't go quite that fast.
