I am looking for MM UB with a hand clutch on the left side of the operator that created a live pto. Is that standard equipment? Can you have a live pto with out the lever? If so what year did it start 53, 54 or 55? Any details you can give me will be well appreciated.

My 53 GTB has one of these live power units. It was obviously installed at a later date. The fender bracket had to be cut out so it would fit. I don't know if it works as I don't have the tractor back together yet.

I have a late ZA that has the live clutch with the handle up on the left side by the left brake drum and it appears to be factory installed. It still works. Harold

As I see it, here's the problem with the set up. If all the parts are there and have not been mofified, getting the forward motion of the tractor stopped is no problem. The problem is actually having the clutch be effective when you are pulling something. If the clutch discs are worn out or covered with oil or if the comprssion springs that constitute the pressure plate are worn out, the tractor will come to a stop. I have seen many of these clutched welded together for what I suspect, is that very reason. Can it work? Yes. Is it a bit temperamental, yes.

yes yes I agree have a ub with that set up. was ok for square baling, but if not set up tight would slip when pulling heavy load like plowing.

That UB live power unit could be put on the older U, I had a 44 U that had it on, didn't keep that tractor long, never used the PTO, hitch was too high, wouldn't hook up to baler. Couldn't keep front end on ground with 3-14" plows. Rebuilt brake in PTO unit, I at under 140# and Dad at 220# could not stand on that left brake pedal hard enough to make it work, liked the tractor otherwise and put out a lot of power, 55HP on PTO with LP heads on the single block tractor.

Hello,
I have a 1952 UTU that has live power, i was thinking it either started in 51 or 52 with the u's and carried into the ub. But if you had a Z you had to go to a ZB in 53 before you could get one, i havent seen a ZA with live power before but that doesnt mean anything
just what i know

A friend is converting a ZA to live power, it involves all the parts from the ZB abd some have to be changed in the rearend.

W Bowers,
I have a 1953 UBE with the l"live" pto.
It does not work as the "clutch" does not knuckle in. I recall some posts a while ago discussing this feature and many people said that the system worked well for work such as hay baling.
The system is acknowledged in my IT repair manual.

The clutch was an option, usually one that was put on. It is a clutch pack that disengages 1 side of the differential allowing the transmission input shaft to carry back to the pto without forward motion of the tractor. Without this clutch you won't be able to stop the tractor with the pto still turning. I believe it was available on the first year of the UB series
