The felt bearing cover, on the rear axle, on a UB, when a new one is put on, do you put it on dry or soak it in oil first? If you put it on dry, what keeps water from soaking it when it rains? Probably a dumb question, but I was just wondering what to do before I put it back together. Thanks, Jason

I would soak them in oil first. Why not put in a rubber lip seal?

Actually, DL, the felt is there to keep dirt out of the lip seal. The lip seal keeps the oil in, the felt keeps the dirt out.

Ok. I had it in my head that there was no rubber lip seal. Why couldn't you put in a double lip seal or one with the dust "lip" {turned out) & forget the felt? Does the felt seal have a grease zerk that lubricates it?

dlp, Yes there is a greese zerk on the outside of axle that greeses the felt seal. Another question, on the PTO gear shift rod that goes into the transmission, there is a felt seal on that about the size of a quarter and about a half inch thick. That is the only seal to keep greese from seaping out, and they don't make them anymore. Any ideas on how to make one or can you use something else? Thanks for any pointers. Jason

Actually, Jason, the grease zerk is to lubricate the outer roller bearing. When you get the cover off that has the lip seal in it, you'll see where the grease goes to.

As far as it goes, you could just put a lip seal in and leave the felt out and noone would ever know.

Measure it & get a lip seal. I'm sure a bearing warehouse can get either or give you direction on a felt seal. As a side note, I used rubber lip seals on both ends of my ZT, which were felt originally. I've read that this is a worthless cause because it would leak. Mine holds wonderfully. Anyway, that's my opinion.

Jason I cut a couple of seals out of raw hide "cow leather" and doubled them up and it worked for me.

Thanks for the ideas, someone today told me he used an "O Ring" and that it's working. I'll see if I can get a lip seal first and see if that works. Thanks again, Jason

I'm sure you don't put it on dry. It would wear quickly if you did. I've used grease on some felt seals, and liberally oiled others from my oil can. I've never soaked them in oil.

Perhaps someone who really knows will tell us when they return from the MM collector's show thats going on this weekend.
