Gentlemen:
I am interested in setting up a stock MM to pull in 2 or 3 weight classes but I have little background with MM other than what I remember as a kid. Is there a better choice for this purpose than the UBU in the late 50 models? Did MM ever have a "torque amplifier" set up? I would appreciate your input/advice.
Thanks Carl

I've got a 40'GT with H/C heads and she does real good at 6500lb. Easy to tune and lots of bottom end. For a straight stock puller its respectable.

The 5 Star Ampli-Torque does not use a sprague but a spring and roller assembly. If it works without fail in a "farming mode" it wil not fail on the track either. These things are pretty darn tough, but if you're experiencing signs of failure in normal use it will need some work. Agco does support these parts very well. If you get to a point of greater HP increases and heavy weight classes there are changes that can be made that will help you. Dale

On the star series, and the 445 that I know for sure. They call it an ampli-torque system.

Just how tough is the ampli-torque? Will it stand
up to pulling? I assume that there is no MM support for a replacement sprague so is there an after market unit available?
thanks,
Carl

We've pulled a 54 model UB for years. It has a slightly modified 336 engine and does extremely well in the 7000-8000 classes. Barrel of fun watching the drivers of red and green competition come up short.

I pulled a 5 Star gas for several years, had a lot of fun with it, have an office full of trophys, (wife won't let me keep them in the house). It pulled from 5000# to 9000#, it had MM OEM power blocks(336 CI.), the engine was balanced, the heads were cleaned up, and had elec. ign. A pure drivers tractor, mopped up on a lot of higher HP tractors. Sure was alot of fun. FYI, Doug has his S670 with 440 CI for sale, it pulls 6500# to 10000#, Dale

5-stars were made three years 57,58,59. Then in very late 59 early 60 came along the m5 which was close to the 5-star only in different clothes. The 5-star had 283 gas and lp engines and 336 diesels as Pete mentioned. They did come with 336 gas engines very very late in 59 as Kelvin had stated just as the m5 where coming out to replace the 5-star. There were a few in 60 but very few and in some cases were listed as modified tractors. I own 3 of them and a parts tractor and just love them. But of course I could be wrong as someone will point out. I left room for error. LOL

The model that replaced the UTU is the 5 Star. It is the first in that size that had the amplitorque. These were made from 1956 to 1960-61 area. In the gasoline thay had the same 283 engine. In diesel they had the 336 engine.

If I am not mistaken, the last 5stars had 336 engines, but I'm not sure what serial number the change occurred at.

all 5 star tractors had the 283 cu. in. engine. the 336 cu. in. eng. was first used in the M5 series. 5 star diesels , only had a 336 cu. in. eng.
