It can be done. I will not say it is easy. The pan can be droppped, the rear main cap removed and the seal retainer pulled out. Using a seal extractor, the old seal can usually be pulled out. Sometimes the old seal is really stuck in the groove and will not pull out. I have had to use wood screws etc.....to get a good enough grip on the old seal. Once you have it pulled out, the fun is just starting. Feeding the new seal back in can be even more fun. Most seal kits come with a cable used to pull the seal around the top side of the crankshaft. Lube the seal up good and pull it into the groove.

This is the short course on installing a real main seal. If you have done this sort of thing before I am sure I have given you more information than you needed.

Good Luck!
