Report to Moderator

I have had trouble with the tractor not running on the #1 and # 4 cylinders. I checked the compression in all cylinders and 180 psi in each cylinder, I checked the spark had a good blue spark on the plug. I rebulit the carb. and now it runs better but it still isn't right and now the trouble is on # 2 and # 3. With the engine running and I pull the wire off the distributor off of # 2 or # 3 and you almost can,t tell that you pulled it off, If you pull it off # 1 or # 4 it really changes. I am at a dead end road and need help.

THANKS FOR ANY HELP DAVID North Carolina

Did you recently have the heads off? You know you need to use the manifold ( one that is flat) to line them up before you torque them down right, did you check the distributor for wear, the bushing or thrust washer could be badly worn, the bushing being worn will reak havoc, very speratic.LW

David - Might be a leaking intake manifold. With the motor idling liberally spray WD-40 around the gasket area where each manifold runner meets the block. If it starts hitting on the cylinder fed from that runner while you are spraying, you've got a manifold leak at that point.

Also have you tried installing a fresh set of spark plugs??

Tom, Try A New Distributer Cap& Wires. It Might Do The Trick.

David,
check your firing order: 1,3,4,2. Also, you might try swapping the primary wires on the coil. It makes a weaker spark one way than the other and I can't tell you which is correct.
Also, you might check your valve clearance. I'm thinking it should be .008 on the intake and .010 on the exhaust.

P.S. what part of NC are you in? I live in Richfield-about midway between Charlotte and Asheboro.

I'm very thinkfull for your help. DAVID

Dave,I had the same problem with a MM U.I replaced the complete ignition, carb, adjusted valves, checked compression, but still had the weak miss.It was real slow to rev up when you hit the throttle and you had to choke it to start it almost all the time.I tried the WD 40 trick by spraying it on the manifold to see if the gasket was leaking.I finally replaced the intake-exhaust manifold and it ran perfect.I took the intake off of the exhaust manifold and found carbon in the intake port inside the exhaust manifold. It had an internal crack on the intake port.It did not have an external crack anywhere. The manifold on the outside looked perfect.

Thanks for sharing that manifold idea with us Pete. I've heard it was common on some Allis models, but never have heard it happening on MM's.
