Can anyone tell me about the 585 MM diesel engines and their use in the G1355. I am toying with getting one, but want to know the Ps and Qs about rebuilding them before I do. Seem to remember hearing about cam and crank issues and an external oil pump, but not the specifics. After all, what could be better than a model that's 1/2 MM, 1/2 Oliver??

Did they throw in a free bridge with that $5000.00 bill? Good Grief, a cummins M-11, N-14, 855, or detroit 60 series can be done for less; and they are all wet sleeve engines.

585 engine is a good as long as it has the external oil pump system modification.
The hydraulic pto causes problems, just cost 1200$ to fix seals.Lots of power

Thanks. Was the external oil pump mod. done by MM or was it an aftermarket fix? Was the internal oil pump the cause of the cam failures or crankshaft problems? Having been an Oliver guy for life, I need to learn more about MM. Appreciate any help.

The external pump was made available by MM (White at the time). Many different variations where available from the dealer based on several factors such as whether the engine had the internal oil filter or spin on oil filters. The G1350 and A4T had the adapter to mount the hydraulic pump directly behind the external pump. Some of the early 585's worked fine with the internal pump, but later ones had problems. The later White 2-150s I believe had the external pump from the factory. We have three 585s, one A4T, two G1350s. One G1350 still has the original internal pump with 4800 hours, runs like a top holds 70lbs of pressure. The A4T and other G1350 have the external pumps. These are very good running engines with a lot of power. If you rebuild, give the pistons slightly more clearance than the book says and you will be fine. Also, all new rod bolts. We love these engines. Good luck.

Thanks, great info. By clearance, do you mean piston clearance in the bore, valve clearance, or something else? Glad to see the 585 has some cheerleaders.

I have a 1976 White 2-150 and it does have an external oil pump along with two external spinon filters that are coupled to an oil cooler. All of it is factory stuff.
