Last year the problem started when I had my sickle mower on, under load the motor slowed and stopped. New points, distributer cap, plugs, fuel line, clear plastic filter in the lines, new gaskets in carb, and put it away for winter with the same problem. Trying to start it this spring I needed a new 6 volt battery, and I put in a new ignition switch, thinking it might have a short. Still same problem, will not stay running under load. I need help, or a buyer for restored R that idles good , but you can't use it.

The last tractor I had that did that had a film of varnish over the filter bowl screen. I could see light through it, but it wouldn't pass enough gas under load to keep it going.

It could sit there and idle all day long.

Thanks for input. It has a muffler that is clear, tried with air cleaner hose off, no help. Bad plastic filter? I put one in so I could see if it had been something with the sediment bowl, think that is not the problem. I went thru the carb last summer, think everything was open. If it was a clogged main jet, would the fast idle change as I turn main jet in or out? The weights on distributor is something I have not been into at all yet.

i would also do a compression test if that is sat its got to be fuel or ignition there is a posibity that it has camshaft and timing trouble but highly unlikly you may want to pull the covers and make sure the valves opening correctly and reset the tappets or make repairs a bad governor or linkage will cause problems and i have seen alot of it on the r series if the carb responds to needle/jet changes it is an indication it is not plugged

Does it still have a muffler? I have run into a clogged one before. Another thought: Is the air cleaner unobstructed? Both would cause it to smother out when you opened it up.

Are u sure main jet is not plugged. Also important to check capaciotr on points ,they fail sometimes though rare. Also check for color of spark it should be blue not red or orange. try another coil just for grins.
