Could anyone shed some LIGHT on this subject?

Just took apart the headlights off my 51 RTE, found something that I have never seen before. The first headlight was normal. lens, reflector, bulb. The second head light had a lens, reflector and bulb plus a second hole in the reflector that had some other sort of electrical device. It held some sort of red plastic lens that is now melted. All I know is that it was wired to the normal bulb socket wire hook ups. I know this sounds confusing, and I hope to have a picture of it soon. Any information on this would be great.

Tyler: It sounds like someone in the distant past had to replace the headlight assembly and the only one they could get was one that was designed for the rear of the tractor. It was common practice to make a dual purpose light for the rear of tractors built before 1960. When the tractor was on the road at nught the driver could rotate the light switch to turn off the rear field light and illuminate a smaller bulb that was positioned behind the now melted red lense. They really didn't produce much light but it was state-of-the-art in 1951.

THE LIGHT YOU FOUND IS THE REMAINS OF WHAT WAS A REAR LIGHT. THERE WAS A BULB THAT WENT UNDER THAT RED LENS FOR DRIVING AT NIGHT. THE ORIGINAL LIGHT HAD A 2 POSITION SWITCH ON THE TOP OF IT. ONE FOR A BEAM OF LIGHT AND ONE FOR THE RED SO YOU WOULDN'T GET REAR ENDED. I JUST REFERBISHED ONE ON MY MM-GB THEY ARE GETTING HARD TO FIND.IF YOU WISH TO REFERBISH E-MAIL ME I HAVE A COULPLE OF GOOD TIPS. UNFORTUNATELY I DONT HAVE A RED LENS

What you have is a reflector for a rear light, probably put in a regular headlight assy. if there is no external hole in the shell for a switch. They used that style rear light, a combination flood and tail, around late 1950-early '51 on MM's up until '59 on the GB's I believe. They had a rotary switch on them to change from a white flood light to a red tail light. From late '50-early '51 up until '53, ZA's used the smaller headlights. I believe the other models used them also, until the sealed beams came out in '53 on the ZB UB GB models. Hope this sheds some light on it.

The light in question was for the rear of the tractor. It should have a seperate switch on it. A small bulb was hooked behind the red part and lit up as a tail light. You could then turn the switch on the light shell and turns off the small bulb and and turn on the large worklight bulb. If your shell doesnt have a switch the tail light reflector was likely used as a replacement.
