Could someone confirm the HP rating of my 1949 UTU engine? The engine tag says: 0194904610 and 4 1/4 x 5 283A4. Also, what does the A4 mean after the 283? Thank you John Kauzlaric

(283 INGINE)THE "UTU" WAS RATED AT 38BHP AND 29 HP AT THE DRAWBAR. IT WAS PROMOTED AS A 3 TO 4 PLOW TRACTOR. THEY INTRODUCED AN LPG OPTION IN 1941 AND LIVE PTO IN 1952.

I presume yuo are talking about a gas. If so it's in the 45 hp range from the factory. LP is about the same as well. The A4 on the end is "A" meaning the first in the series of 283 engines each veriation it would cange to "B" "C" and so on. The "4" stands for the number of cylinders it has. Hope this clears things a little.

These replies are very different. Two books can say different things. Who is correct? Is there a Nebraska test result available for this tractor and engine? Once again thank you John Kauzlaric

John IL,

You have to go back to 1938 and 1939 to find offical Nebraska test results on your U. Even though there were changes in the U engine by the time your 1949 was built, evidently M-M didn't consider them significant enough to re-test the tractor. In 1938 M-M had the gas UTS tested and it resulted in a Test C maximum horsepower rating of 41.67. In 1939 the gas UTU was tested at 41.51 horsepower, both at the belt. Hope this is what you were looking for.

Jim

The "Tractor Field Book" (1947 edition) shows a test on a 1939 model with 37.76 B.H.P and 45.27 drawbar HP corrected to sea level

Correction: it should be 37.76 drawbar and 45.27 BHP

I think the numbers are backwards. BHP is Brake horsepower (or belt horsepower) and is always more than drawbar hp due to loss through gear train, wheel slip, etc.
