I have resored 3 of these spreaders. They are
great to put literature in at a show. You will
need to measure the spreader at the front and the
back. The ones I have are 1 1/2 inch wider at the
back. Guessing this was to keep the manure from
packing and wedging as it went back.

Roger, What kind of wood did you use? How /or do you make it water proof for the literature? I've got one that needs wood also. Would like to use it for displays. Thanks, John

The original wood was Pine on all 3 that I restored.
I am fortunate to have a good source of lumber. I
used clear Pine, cheaper and lighter. I did paint
them back to original color. I do keep them
inside. You can put liturature wrapped in plastic
under the slats. It keeps the wind from blowing it
away. Good place to lean an MM sign also.

If I am not mistaken mine has oak on it. I would use a hard wood to restore it. But pine would be o.k. for showing too, like Kelvin said a clear pine is best with no knots in it. Knots will loosen up and fall out.

I don't know what is available in your area. If I were doing it here in NC, I would like to use treated pine, preferably yellow pine. (its stronger)
Go to your lumber yard with a list of the sizes you need, pick out the best boards available with little warp, no bow or twist and few small knots (prefer no knots at all). If the spreader used extremely wide boards-over 7-1/2" you might have to compromise and use some narrower boards. Its very hard (and expensive) to find good lumber any larger than that around here.
