A question on operation. When I engage the clutch (lever pushed forward) the tractor runs thru the gears fine. When I pull back and disengage, and let out the clutch, the tractor pulls forward at a lower gear ratio and then coasts to a stop, as if I had pushed in a clutch.

Isn't the amplitorque an underdrive system?

Should one smell LP gas fumes with the engine running at idle speed in neutral?

What is the lever on the left side of the seat on the cab floor for?

BTW, thanks for all the answers to this rookie's questions. Y'all are a great help.

You shouldn't smell propane at any time engine ideling, running under load or off. you have a leak somewhere.

The most simple and quickest way I can describe the ampli-Torc is that there is a "clutch pack" that engages and disengages a planetary with an over-running clutch.

I think your over running clutch is bad. I don't think it will hurt anything the way it is, it is just a nusance.

This is a common problem with tractors that were used a lot with the torc in low with out a load. The low side was ment to gear the tractor down to increase pulling ability and ease of take off not as a seperate gear. The load on the torc dosen't hurt anything it's the no load that will get them because the tractor "free wheeles" then pulls then free wheeles then pulls then free wheeles you get the idea this causes the over-running clutch to wear out and fail prematurely.

If you do fix it, check the driving plates their should be four. Replace them if they are worn or the tabs are starting to be worn off. They are part of what I called the "clutch pack" for lack of a better name.

The lever on the left should be to ingage and dissingage the PTO if it is a tall lever that comes up to about the hight of the seat.

I hope that helps. If you have anymore questions just ask.

Could the pull-free wheeling-pull you mention be the sensation I felt. It felt like the tractor would pull then coast, I just didn't feel the pull again.

The book makes this sound like an involved repair. Splitting the tractor apart?

This M670 super ('66) with 2300 hrs showing, bald tires otherwise looks clean and in good repair. $4500 sounds high to me. Any other opinions?

Yes that is exactly what is happening your over-running clutch isn't grabing after the tractor free wheels some times they wont grab when you first take off or will slightly move the tractor.

Location is a bigger factor in price than condition I'm starting to think. That may not be a bad price for one depending on your area. Here you should be able to get a nice one with out any problems for that.

I'm in central Nebraska and we bought a 1967 670 super for $1100 the driving plates were bad in the torc. It needed breaks also, the front motor mounts on both sides were broke we didn't know about the moder mounts till we got it home and started looking at it harder. Of the MM's that size the 670 super as the best stearing.

They arn't to bad to split and the over-runnig clutch I don't think is to expensive. When we did the driving plates on our 670 we were suprised how much they had went up.
