5 Star Diesel Injector Pump Seal

My 5 Star Diesel is getting fuel into the crank case. I am speculating that the injector pump has a shaft seal that is no longer doing its assigned task. Does anyone have any experience with this problem? If there is a seal that allows fuel to leak into the crank case, can the seal be replace without doing a complete rebuild of the pump?

Thanks for your inputs!

I have a 5-star diesel! Mine was leaking fuel in around the o-rings and or the copper gasket that seats in and around the holder for the nozzle assy.

Mine seems to leak even when the tractor is not running. That is why I beleive that the fuel must have a low pressure leak path through the pump. I do not know at this point. I might pull a pump off a parts engine this weekend and look to see if there is a logical leak path around the shaft.

Keith,
Do you have the original Bosch PSB pump or a later Roosa-Master pump? The later Roosas have a seal inside that can go bad. I've had the transfer pump on a tractor with a PSB pump go bad and leak all the fuel into the crankcase. The transfer pump is bolted on the side of the PSB pump and has the fuel lines going to and from it. I've had a PSB pump apart but don't remember there being a direct path for fuel to leak out. The PSB pump runs in engine oil and the fuel is pretty much contained to the pump head on top other than the transfer pump bolted on the side. The Roosas run in fuel thus when the main shaft seal goes it leaks the fuel directly into the crankcase. Hope this helps.

Thanks Brian! I had not thought about the transfer pump section of the Bosch pump. How did you fix the problem? If replacing or repairing the transfer pump might cure the leak, I would like to give that a shot. I have a couple of other options to fix my propblem 1) Try the other Bosch pump I have from a later motor, 2) Rebuild a Roosa-Master pump I have and not keep the tractor original, 3) Build a gas motor and not spend a lot of money repairing any of my injector pumps.

Keith,
Honestly I haven't fixed that tractor yet. Its sat in the barn ever since I found a crankcase of fuel (I drained it of course). I planned to see if there was a seal in the transfer pump that could go bad. If not then I guess I'd be looking for a good transfer pump. There's got to be a seal in there though somewhere.

Brian,

Good call on the transfer pump seal. There is a seal on the shaft behind the drive gear. When I spin my pump by hand, the fuel starts to seep past the seal. MM does not list this seal in their books. So, I am going to try and get one from a diesel shop. Hopefuly this is my only problem.

Glad I could be of help. Let me know if you get a seal part number. I may need it later to fix mine.

Brian,

The seal part number is PK 7910. I got them at the local diesel shop. Cost was about $5 each. If you have trouble finding one near you, let me know. I will gladly pick one up for you. Your advice was most helpful.
