Just aquired a 1958 5 Star. It hasn't run in 2 years and seems to turn over rather stiff. It has a new battery and the previous owner just had the starter redone by a starter rebuilder about 1 month ago. He also had the battery hooked up positive ground. I believe that it should be neg. ground. If so would this have anything to do with it turning over so stiff? Any suggestioins is greatly appreciated.

I would try rolling the engine over by hand. Either by pulling on the fan or putting a wrench on the end of the crank. The engine should roll freely until it comes up on compression. When it does come up on compression, hold the engine in that position and let the compression bleed off. Go around at least two times to make sure everything has stroked inside the motor. If you find a tight spot, there might be some rust build-up inside one or more of the cylinder bores from sitting.

I have all my 5-stars changed to negative ground. Reversing the polarity will not affect the starter in anyway. What fuel type is your 5-star? My diesel always did turn over hard. Email me I would like to talk to you some more about yours.

I think it's correct. Some have been switched but if it's backwards the starter drive shouldn't engage.
