I bought a MM M5 LP tractor last year and looked at the tag on the side of the transmission and it says M602. The tractor has M5 decals. I know the guy who I bought it off and he says that he bought a bunch of those tractors new and swears they were M5. Is it an M5 or really an M602? The clutch is really slipping looks like a little oilly in there, where can I get a replacement clutch and assorted parts for a Minneapolis. Thanks for your help.

sounds like they may have bolted a 602 rear to a M-5 engine.

the difference between the M5 & M602 is just appearance. different casting above the grill, grill, & color. the M602 had the bandana on the grill, & rounded nose, while the M5 was pointy. the M5 was the older more orange "power yellow", while the M602 is the modern "Industrial Yellow". same engine & transmission on the M5's I've seen as my M602.

Just looked and the serial number is 26601835, and it says M 602. It has all M 5 sheet metal and the orig owner says it is an M5. It doesn't matter which one it is to me just trying to figure out what is going on.

Hi,

According to serial number, your tractor is a M-602 gas or LP, model year 1964.

The confusion may be a result of the notation which accompanies the serial number prefix for your M-602. The "266" prefix, which your tractor has, supposedly means: "M602 M5 tractor 2-wheel drive, (gas or LP gas)".

The M602 was the replacement for the M5, being a re-vamped M5 basically. That's the only explanation I have as to why it has the M5 decal. What's the engine model/serial number of your tractor? Maybe that'll help explain this.

Hope this helps.

Respectfully,
