MM GB LP Ensign Question

I have 2 1959 MM GB and a 3rd 58 GB parts tractor and a 52 U Parts tractor - all LP with Ensign Carb, Ensign Model R Regulator, Ensign Fuel Filter. None of these tractors currently run. Trying to get first of GB's going - local LP dealer says filter leaks and should be replaced. Also wants to replace with IMPCO carb and what he calls vaporizer. I would like to kep these as original as possible, but willing to borrow parts on assumption that I can get 2 running as stock at best. Three Questions:

1. How good were Ensign parts - dealer says not as good as IMPCO, but I wonder? Clearly Ensign is no longer there and he can get IMPCO.
2. How likely are various parts to need replacement - assuming tractors not run for several years? Is regulator most likely problem and other things relatively simple in comparison?
3. I had heard there was someone out there hand making refurb kits, particularly for regulators - can anyone give me details?

I VERY MUCH DISAGREE WITH YOUR LP DEALER FOR STANDARD USE ENSIGN REGULATOR/VAPORIZERS DO THE BEST JOB AND RUN'S SMOOTHER. THE GB HAS AN ENSIGN #NO 8059 MODEL R VAPORIZER, AND AN ENSIGN
#NO 8628 ECONOMIZER. GET KITS FOR BOTH EVERHART 2 WAY LP GAS
ROUTE 1 BOX 169
LONE WOLF, OKLAHOMA 73655
(405)846-5633 ASK FOR HERMAN
WOULD NEED TO KNOW MORE ABOUT YOUR FILTER LEAK BUT I SHOULDN'T THINK IT WOULD BE TO DIFFICULT TO FIX HERMAN AND OR OTHERS WILL SELL YOU A NEW FUEL FILTER & GASKET

New Area Code 580 846-5633 works.

Ordered Model R regulator kit $70; filter $15

I'd like to know how you make out with the kits. I ordered a kit for the newer M670, have the new diaphrams, but not the hardware that is mounted in them. $70 and I have to go to a machine shop to have some of the pieces (worn out) made to mount on the diaphram. Doesn't seem like that's a good deal anymore. The diaphrams don't even have the center hole in them, makes it kinda rough to repair unless one does that all the time, or owns a machine shop.

Not sure what you have thats worn out in metal area, but all mine seem reusable. Maybe another option would be to send your regulator to Everhart for refurbishment - he probably has better access to spare parts - have you called him back?

Obviously I'd like to have gotten more for $70 - kit included 2 diaphrams with correct shape and mounting hole patterns (high pressure did have center hole, but not low pressure), 4 special gaskets (1 for each side of diaphram), large shaped rubber piece, and a couple of smaller gaskets. All pieces are matched to geometry but no metal parts included.

Would like to have new springs and everything, and certainly better if metal installed on diaphram as I hate to cut the low press to install center, but I guess all things considered, its worth the $70 to me compared to the options. Hope to have it running in a day or so.

Thanks for info - I kind of suspected whatever dealer had access to was going to be "better" than using existing hardware. I have tried to contact number you gave and get number not in service. Would appreciate a recheck on number as I would like to buy kits for my Ensign stuff.

P.S. GB's and U are 8059 Model R regulators; filters are model 6257; Economizers are 8628 on GB's but U only has plug that adjusts it - no vacuum line or diaphragm. Carbs aren't marked as far as I can see, but book says 7595 KGL (1 1/4") for GB and 7593 KGL (1") for U. I think thats consistent with everything else I've got, but there may have been 8059 Model R regulator changes at regulator s/n 48372 - anyone know what those were?

Thanks again. Ed

MM Repair Catalog R1115A for U, UTS, UTC with 283A4 motor 01914127 to 01925367 (mid 1951 to end 1952?) shows only KE834 Ensign 1" Vaporizer 8059 Model R. But same parts book shows repair kit 10R86 for Vaporizer to s/n 48371 and 10R241 for Vaporizer s/n 48372 and after. UB book R1119D shows only 10R241 for vaporizer, but also shows carb kit 10R87.

In my opinion, ensign is as good as or better on a STOCK tractor than any others out there. That said,if you have problems with an ensign component and dont have a spare,go with impco or century. The ensigns are extremely hard to find parts for and if you are wanting more power for pulling, impco has what you need.My tractors are all ensign and they seem to run smoother and start faster than other brands.I have a green tractor with a century system that is not nearly as fast starting. One other bonus with ensign is that the adjustments in the manual are located and work exactly as printed.Impco or other brands may not be setup the same and the adjustments may be trial and error.
