I just bought a 335, S/N 11600228, which is a 1957 LP gas Universal. The big problem with it is that the hydraulic pump was lost by a rebuilder. Where can I get a good Pump? The seller said the lift was working fine and suddenly dropped the load before a mechanic sent the pump in. Sounds to me like something besides the pump failed. Is there an internal hose like my D17 Allis has, or a seal that can suddenly fail? I would also like to add power steering. Would a Utility or 445 unit work and how much needs to be changed? It has the wide adjustable front axle. I see from the serial list that not too many Universals were made. Is there a record of the last serial number? Also, I wonder how many were LP equipped?

Thanks, Allyn

Allyn,
Sounds like either the bolt broke on one of the spools or the outer portion of the spool broke in two. I have seen both of these occur on these systems. The pump would not cause the system to drop the load.

As for power steering for your tractor, the complete system from a 335 or 445 utility will have all the correct parts. A 445 universal's parts will be correct except for the lines will be too long by the transmission but you can shorten them. A system from an early Jet Star or early 4 Star will work (again the 4 Star's will be too long). Later 4 Stars & Jet Stars have a different Control valve on them, but they will work.

All of the hydraulic pumps I have seen on tractors without power steering have had the correct holes for the priority valve in them. They just didn't have the valve or spring and had a special plug in the opening.

My one 335 has had a 5 Star or M5 pump on it for 30 years. The following pumps will work: 335, 445, 5 Star, early M5, early 4 Star, early Jet Star. The difference is that the bigger tractors have a thicker center plate and gears to pump more volume. If I remember correctly 335 is 3/4", 445, Jet Star & 4 Star are 1" and 5 Star & M5 are 1-1/4"

John

Congratulations on your new tractor allyn. As far as I know, serial numbers for gas and lp were listed together, At least they were for most other MM models and there is no way to tell how many of each, but I'd bet a 335 lp was much more rare.
Last Summer I spent about $150 repairing the steering valve on my 335 utility. Its still maginal, at best. that's just the valve, I didn't touch the cylinders. My advice is to learn to love your 335 without power steering. If you do decide to add power steering, and want to do it with all MM parts, you need to know before you buy a pump, because the pumps for power steering have a priority valve in the back plate. There is also another outlet in the pump for the pressure line to the power steering.

Another thing to be aware of is the MM power steering hoses that 'jump' across the bell housing use female SAE flare ends. I spent all day looking for a hose to fix my tractor-broken down 20 miles from home-ended up with cobbled up mess of automobile power steering hose and adapters.
