Brian in talking with my dad he told me a neighbor of ours when i was young had a 1952 standard "u" with a diesel motor, it was a 3cylinder or 4cylinder he could not remember but he did know it was built by harnishfagger (sorry spelling is off)industries.Anyway they are the parent company of Beloit Corp.I was wondering how many were made.

I doubt that this will help much, But I grew up in Escanaba Michigan and Harnischfaeger Corporation was building Cranes in that area in the 60's and 70's.

Hi!

Well..... .....

Hmm. First off, I am not aware of either of the companies you mentioned, so I am not sure how they relate to all of this exactly.

But, M-M did produce a UTSD "U Tractor Standard Diesel), otherwise known as a UDS (U Diesel Standard), produced from 1952 through 1956. There was also a military version of the UTSD, designated UTSD-M (M for Military). They were only produced in 1954 and 1955. Combined, a total of 2404 UTSDs and UTSD-Ms were produced, with ~1150 of them being UTSD-Ms (sorry, I don't have a pen handy to figure the exact numbers).

M-M also produced a version of the UTSD-M for Turkey. They were made from 1956 through 1958, and 391 of them were made. That is additional to the 2404 UTSDs and UTSD-Ms mentioned above.

How all of this relates to Harnishfagger (sp) Industries, I do not know. Perhaps (if I am reading your post right), Harnishfagger's engine was an after-market jobby meant to be added to regular UTSs. But I am not sure on that.

Hope this helps.

Respectfully,

I hope that someone can shed some light on the "Harnishfagger Industries" engines. This is completely new to me, but it does sound interesting. I do however have to correct you Brian on one small point. The UTSD-M tractors made for Turkey were produced in 1956-1958 as you stated, but there were more than 391 made. All serial number lists that I have seen show only a beginning number for model year 1958...10800391. It appears to be open for the ending number-probably meaning that there is no official record of the number made for 1958. I state this because I have in my possession UTSD-M #10800536. I have no idea how many more came off the line after mine, but it would be interesting to find out. Does anyone reading this have a higher serial number tractor with the 108 prefix? These tractors are maybe not rare, but they are rather unique compared to other "U" diesels. With the exception of the inline injection pump and the newer style hood decals, it would appear as though MM used up left over parts to assemble some of this tractor.

A contractor with whom I work told me that his dad worked for Minneapolis-Moline in international sales to Turkey and Iran. I will print out this copy and give to Sohrab (Robb) and see if his dad can help with any more information.

Hi,

Thank you for correcting me on that; I always appreciate it when someone lets me know when I have something wrong so that I can then correct my thinking.

Thanks for stating why exactly I was wrong, too; without hard proof, such as your UTSD-M, I couldn't be absolutely sure. But it is clear that you are right on this matter, and I will do my best to dig to find out more.

Once again, thank for your pointing out my error.

Respectfully,

Brian Dave was alot closer on the spelling, the correct spelling is Harnischfeger Industries. Now i talked to my Dad again and he said that the tractor screamed just like our oliver super99,so that would make me believe that it was a two-stroke diesel. He also thinks it was a factory job,but what i was wondering was could a dealer have thought it up and made them to order?I know in Illinois oliver dealer would build 88's with 99 motors to get a little more power, maybe a MM dealer built the diesel.
