1355 Shifting gears and Brakes

I have little experience with tractors to compare, but this 1355 shifts very hard.
1. I put in in R today and thought I was going to have to get a pry bar to get it out to go forward. It seemed to get better as the engine warmed up, but it remained harder that I expected. The clutch engages and disengages easily and doesn't seem to be a problem.
2. The brakes seem to be real touchy. I can't apply light braking. When I apply brake pedal pressure, the wheel almost locks up. Same on both sides. The parking brake has to be pulled all the way back to engage, and still doesn't hold if I'm on an incline.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or diagnostic tips are appreciated.

Every 1355 I've seen has the same problem as yours does in respect to shifting and braking. The brakes are very touchy and there is nothing you can do about it.There is a slight possibility you have some air in the lines which can be bled out at the brake assembly but probably won't help much. As far as shifting..... get used to it. The 3 speed hydra power tends to drag putting tension on the tranny gears taking out all the back lash. I would suggest moving the 3 speed through all three speeds and low usually takes the tension out of the tranny enough to shift. Oh, and don't park it on a hill in reverse---you may never get it out of gear.
hope this helps.
Jack

Well, I've found the stuck in reverse thing. I got it out after moving around a bit. Now I have a clue as to why, and not to do it again. Thanks

#2-b question: there is an adjustment on each brake to bring the parking brake into the right range to lock tight in the middle of the notches. You need an operators manual or tech manual to see the steps. I believe it is behind a dust cover on each side that looks like a wheel hub cover. Locking nut and an allen wrench to adjust if I remember right.
#2-a question: the brakes are power brakes so you have to apply them lightly and together. They could have oil or dirt in the housing that may make them grab more than they should.

#1 question: Is the clutch releasing completely? Any trouble grinding when putting it in gear? Ours had something such as filings in the housing causing the plates to drag to the point we couldn't get it in gear if the tractor was running. After trying some ways to wash out the housing it disappeared and works fine now.
We have learned to slip it out of gear before it completely stops and/or shifting to low range to help shifting. It takes awhile for it to release the hydraul if you push the clutch in with it in direct or over and make it easier to shift. I think it is hard to shift because the gears are dragging against each other. Sometimes letting the clutch out momentarily and then stopping with the brakes releases the drag. Good luck.

I am responding to you since you seem to know about the oliver 1355, I am currently looking to purchase a 1355 but there is s/n model number questions. The data plate reads "made in Italy model # 435 22023 s/n 517447. The 1355 is painted on the side. Any help on the year or "made in Italy"would be great.

Tom

Sorry for the late reply, I'm crusin old messages. The MM registry, Brian Rukes (I may have misspelled his name but it is all over messages on the board), can answer your question if anybody can. Best of luck, Keep in touch about the 1355 & your experiences.
