I have seen some UB special wide front ends that are a round axle type and some are a sqaure type. I was just wanting to know if someone could tell me the difference, if there is one. I have just purchased a UB special diesel that has the square type and would like to have the round axle type. Thanks in advance, A. Sellars

Thanks for all the information. I have the original square type on my UB special diesel, but would like to find a round type.

The square type is the original wide front end according to the UB Special parts manual. The 5 Stars had the round axle. You might be able to swap a 5 Star axle onto your UB Special. I believe the mounting was similar.

Guys, I'm thinking the "Square axle" is factory, and the round axle is aftermarket-possibly a Schwartz.
If I were ever lucky enough to own one, I'd want one with the "square" axle.

Your Choice; It may only be a matter of personal preference, but, I would stay with the square tube front end. It is stronger and more stable, besides you can round out your collection anytime you run across a compatible MM front end. No rush since you've got the factory setup right in the yard. Good luck.

I believe the early specials had the round and the later ones had the square axle i could have that backwards either one is not easy to find if it has the square one that is probally the right one for it.

A.Sellers, I too just purchased a UB Diesel over the weekend. It has the square front axel on it. With powersteering. Has American Bosch inline injection pump on it, not the PBS pump That I have seen in pictures. Needs powersteering help on mine. Don't know much about MM. What are they worth? How good were they? How often find them with belt pulley? Mine does not have the usual pan seat but rather an upholstered seat with arm rests. Hope we find answers to our questions. Jerry
