MM R Oil Pressure Problem

I just got running a 1948 R that had been sitting for about 10 years. It started right up but only developed 3-5 lbs of oil pressure. Finally found that filling the crankcase 1 quart over full (7 quarts with filter change), pressure came up to 15 - 20 lbs at hot idle. Any ideas what might be causing this. Not sure how to get access to the oil pump/pickup on a MM R. Thanks.

Make sure your guage is good. Could be your line is plugged up or the oil pressure guage is bad.

Get another guage to verify what the problem is. If its a guage problem. You will know right away. It will save you alot of trouble of having to pull things apart.

This way you can be sure you have a pump problem and not just a simple guage problem.

Thanks to all who responeded. The guage is correct as that was the 1st thing I tried. I suspect some problem with the pickup since the low pressure occurs only if the oil level is not a quart above full. Will let you know what I find after I remove the side cover.

I can't think why an extra quart of oil would make a difference, unless maybe there's a leak in the side cover gasket.
I'd replace it, clean the pickup screen and check the connecting rod bearing clearance while I was in there. (I bought a running R, too. got .017 clearance in the rods, so it gets to sit for a spell.)
Also, the oil pressure on those oil pumps is adjustable. You loosen the nut on the side of the oil pump, and turn the setscrew in. If you think the relief valve is sticking, remove the large nut that setscrew is in and the plunger and screw behind it and clean and inspect everything.

You can access the oil pump from the bottom of the engine where the oil filter bolts on. The pickup must be accessed by taking off the engine side cover, it's at the rear of the crank case & the oil is pulled thru the casting to the pump.
