starter problems on UTU?

I have a UTU with a 403 eng. The starter does not have enough power to turn the engine over fast enough. When the motor is cool it starts very easy, but after you warm it up a little and shut it off it is difficult to start because the starter wont whirl the motor fast enough. Have had the starter checked out, mechanic said it was fine... put in a couple of bushings but thats all. Has hot battery. Any input on a larger starter or anything else I could do to fix problem? Have 12 volt system.

A good 6 volt U starter with 00 cables and a 600+ amp 12 volt battery should do it. The heavy cables made a big difference for mine.

These starters were never ment to "whirl" the engine. They turn the engine slightly faster than if you hand crank it. If it whirls the engine, you have a compression problem. If you have a problem starting it, it is either spark (none? weak?), or fuel(to much? - not enough?). If you have a magneto on the tractor, and you spin it too fast it will not want to start.

Here's a thought for you. I am not sure how much money you want to spend but you could put a starter in it off of a diesel tractor. Not knowing though what ring gear you are running is the only real problem. Then you would need to run dual 12 volt batteries. You can do it on one but it will zap a single battery quick if you stay on it too long.
