I have a U and my dad always said never use anything but SAE 30 non-detergent. Some folks are telling me that detergent will be fine. What is the bottom line on this?

Also, what type of oil filter should I use on the 283B4 (a '53 UB engine) and where could I get this filter in the Minnesota area?

Thanks.

The best rationale for detergent -vs- non-detergent oils I've heard is regarding the seals in the engine. Original oil seals were made of felt, whereas newer seals have neoprene. As the oil ages and starts to get dirty, the felt seals would fill full of the dirty oil. If the operator replaced non-detergent oil with detergent oil, the detergent would dissolve the dirty sludge around the felt seal and put that dirt back into the engine. The non-detergent oil would not dissolve it, and the oil would remain cleaner.

Some folks claim they see a lot of oil leaks around older selas when switching to detergent oils. My ZTU hasn't run in 30 years, so I don't speak from experience. When it gets completed, it'll have a rebuilt engine, so detergent oil shouldn't be a problem.

probably the best place to get a filter is an AGCO delear. The delear that i go to is cheaper than Napa and Carquest. I belive the filter is part# KE5905
