Gentlemen, I will be installing a full electrical system on my 1940 ZTU this winter. Of the materials/equipment I have, the magneto and the generator both have been rebuilt. I have all gauges, cables, and wiring. However, my tractor originally came with an generator cut-out relay before I took all the stuff off. I plan on keeping things original as possible for show purposes only. Would it be wise to switch the wiring to a voltage regulator from the cut-out? Does anyone have a good wiring diagram to do this work? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you have any other questions, email them to me or just post them here. Thanks for your time and consideration.

Oh! I get it!-The detail pictures are of a ZA and the full views are of a ZT.

I have a '38 ZTU with the cutout. Haven't had it running since I went to college in '2000. Back when it was running, The cutout charged fine, as far as I could tell. I did have problems with starter issues, though. (Cables and grounds.)

If your ignition switch is all there and works, I suggest putting it back just like you found it.

Aaron - Are you sure it’s wired up correctly? Also make sure the regulator base solidly grounded …the system won’t charge if it is not!

The regulator should be connected like this:

1 – Regulator “G” to generator “Arm” 2 – Regulator “F” to generator “Fld”
3 – Regulator “B” to ammeter.

If the regulator has a 4th (“L”) terminal connect to the hot side of the ignition and light switches. (Otherwise the ignition and light switches are fed from the ammeter terminal that’s connected to the regulator “B”…)

Once you are certain it’s wired correctly, polarize the generator by momentarily jumpering the “B” and “G” terminals at the regulator before starting the engine. You should then be good to go!

Nice pix BTW! Would like one of those Kosch Steering Aids for my UTU. Steering it is literally a handful on a rough field (punch below for a shot of it “at work” at an antique tractor plow day a couple weekends ago)

Hi Aaron, I had to look at the pictures of your "winter Project". Nice, but what is that Kosch Steering Aid? I have never heard of that. Is that a ZA rear end on an older Z? I have a 39Z, 45 Z and a early 1950's ZA. They are nice tractors, love to hear them do a little work.

Brian, The Kosch Steering Aid was an early device to take the shock out of the steering wheel when hitting a furrow or rough ground before power steering came along. The large hub has a ratchet clutching system in there to take all the shock instead of breaking your wrists.
